Can large news outlets stop humanizing #45's possible SCOTUS pick please?
Thousands are likely going to die and I don't want to know about how ACB's friends think she is "generous and hospitable."
Hey Reader,
I read a bunch of Amy Coney Barrett piecesā¦and I have thoughts. Letās unpack how large news outlets are presenting her.
***Before I point out what I think should be said, I do think these pieces that Iām writing about do provide necessary information (like pointing out this court case where ACB gives a dissenting opinion to a pro-choice ruling). ****
I spent yesterday and today reading as much as I could stomach about Amy Coney Barrett for the selfish reason of trying to calculate how f*cked my reproductive rights are at the very moment.
I came across a trend I found disturbing. Some writers (and editors) think itās ok to add in cutesy details about Barrettās personal life at length.
Here are some examples:
The Guardian chronicled how nice ACB was to āa less educated womanā at length.
The New York Times talked about how she volunteered at her childās school, and that her friends thought her family was āradically generous and hospitable.ā
Politico described how āwell respectedā the Supreme Court Justice hopeful was by colleagues at length.
We all do normal human things, and most of us have friends that would say we can be kind. However, highlighting these moments in Barrettās life serves the same purpose that the Presidentās possible nomination of a woman does; making her more palatable.
Ultimately, Amy Coney Barrett is a woman that could have a ton of power very soon, and she will be installed by the president to essentially kill the ACA, DACA, and Roe v Wade during a pandemic. Millions of people will be affected by conservative SCOTUS rulings, hundreds of thousands could die without access to healthcare, and abortions, not to mention the thousands that could be deported should DACA be ended for good.
It makes no sense to fill graph after graph with anecdotes about how Barrettās colleagues and friends (of her class no less) encountered her ākindnessā and āradical generosity,ā because letting poor people die for lack of healthcare is not ākind.ā
I donāt need to hear about how Barrettās demeanor is calm, because she would be installed to perform the same thing as Kavanaugh, and that is to take away reproductive rights, deny healthcare to millions, and carry out an anti-immigrant agenda.
These are the facts and context that need to be the main highlight of every Amy Coney Barrett piece, itās dangerous to (whether consciously or subconsciously) make her more āpalatableā because the ramifications of her appointment are huge.
